At the moment, I do not know a lot about New Elizabethans. I know what the Elizabethans looked like, how the dressed and how they acted but I never really looked into how and why they looked like they did. My initial thoughts included the heart shaped hair style, lots of pearls and fair hair colours. I knew about these things due to seeing portraits of Queen Elizabeth and other Elizabethan characters, such as Anne Boleyn. All of the Elizabethans hair colours were fair and almost always ginger or yellow. The texture of the hair looked very frizzy and styles almost always the same. The hairstyles are all very big and look very padded. Most of the women had items in their hair such as pearls, diamonds, veils and/or tiaras/crowns.
Like in the picture of Queen Elizabeth below, her hair is very textures and almost looks crimped. She had a lot of accessories in her hair including mainly pearls. Her hair is ginger in comparison to her white face. She seems so have a crown like accessory in the back of her hair which almost looks like a piece of bunched up material.
These two images below look as though they are modern but trying to recreate the typical Elizabethan look. Both of the styles are in heart shapes and are very textures. However, unlike the portraits where the texture of the hair looks crimped and messy, these images show off a tight curled texture. It looks as though that whole head has been tightly curled and then pinned up in a heart shape. Her hair is also ginger which goes with the idea that most Elizabethan women have fair red hair. The women in the pictures also have accessories in their hairs, which could be an attempt to look more like Queen Elizabeth's portraits. In the first image she has pearls and a black crown like accessory and in the second, the whole centre section of her hair is covered by a large feather and a diamond like jewel at the bottom. These accessories also compliment her outfits and jewellery in the images. I like the way these stylists have attempted to mimic the way Queen Elizabeth would have had her hair like. I think its a realistic view of a classic Elizabeth woman in power.
When researching New Elizabethan hairstyles I came across these images of Beyonce from the o2 advert campaign. These images look as though they are trying to copy the idea of a Queen (Queen Elizabeth). Beyonce is known as the Queen so maybe they tried to represent her media title as a modern version of Queen Elizabeth. Her hair is very textured and backcombed as it looks frizzy. It doesn't particularly mimic the idea of the heart shapes Elizabethan style but does have a lot of volume and shape. All of the hair has been pulled over to one side and a crown has been placed in the hair which could be a representation of power and fame. Like the idea of Elizabethans having fair hair, with the filter of these images (especially the second image), Beyonce's hair almost looks yellow which is similar to the colour of hair the Elizabethans would have had and wanted when they were in a state of power. I like these images because they are like a modern representation of how a young, powerful Queen would have looked. The gold in the images also add to the amount of power shown in these images. I really like this hair style and is something I want to explore further in this project.
Whilst researching the Elizabethan style I also came across these beauty images. These images include braids which represent a more modern feel. The first two images illustrate the idea of the heart shaped hairstyles well but in more of a modern way. The first image looks like the two sides of the heart shape has been creates by plaiting each side of the head and then wrapping it around to create two bun-like shapes. Then a braid has been brought round from the back, around the bun at the front to create more of a texture. Unlike the Elizabethans, the model in this first images hair is black. This could actually portray a more modern ideal of Elizabethan style because dark hair is a lot more in fashion in todays society than it would have been in that era.
This image also shows of the classic heart shaped hair style but again in more of a modern way. Two small braids have been brought the buns at the front. The buns do not have much texture as it looks like the hair has been straightened and pinned back in a rounded shape. The buns are quite messy and hair is poking out all over the buns, but i quite like this idea. The hair isn't particularly fair but isn't black, which again shows more of a modern aspect.
This final image represents the ideal of Elizabethan hair in a whole new way. The heart shape isn't clear and the design isn't tidy but you can clearly see where the Elizabethan idea has come in to it. Although this image looks more like a image attempted to look like Edward Scissorhands, the Elizabethan look is visible due to the hair being up and in a shape which could be trying to portray a messy heart shape. This is a much more modern idea of an Elizabethan style because the hair is multi-coloured. However, the hair is very textures and looks more like how an Elizabethan design would be textures than the previous image. I like this image because its more like a beauty image than any of the other images. I could imagine something like this being in a magazine or on an advertisement. I will definitely keep this idea in mind in the future of the project because it's different but represents all the ideas studied in this project.
